Ogilvie FFA Livestock Evaluation Team is the State Champion
livestock eval team.jpg
Tuesday afternoon is one that five FFA Members from Ogilvie will never forget. That is when they were named as the 2012 Minnesota FFA Livestock Evaluation Champion Team. The team out judged over fifty other teams and over 220 individuals to become the top team in their area for 2012. The team also earned the privilege to represent Minnesota FFA at the National FFA contest next October in Indianapolis.

(L to R)Jason Troendle-National FFA Secretary, Tyler Troupe, Tony Munsterteiger, Shane Steinbrecher, Anna Munsterteiger and Adam Munsterteiger.
Team members included Tony Munsterteiger , Adam Munsterteiger, Anna Munsterteiger, Shane Steinbrecher, and Tyler Troupe. Tony Munsterteiger was also named the top individual judge in the State in this contest.
The actual contest was held on Monday during the 83st State FFA Convention. During the contest the team had to judge two classes of beef, two sheep and two swine. They also had a Cull/Keep Class, and two classes of oral reasons. Out of a possible 1350 points in the contest they only missed sixty-one points. The contest is always a very tough contest with many exceptional teams from all across Minnesota. tony.jpg
The team was very confident and felt they had done well but had a difficult time sleeping Monday night when they found out they were in the top five teams. After all the tense hours of waiting and dreaming of what it would be like to win they were overjoyed to find out they had indeed made it to the top. Adam was most confident when on Sunday night at a team meeting he announced that “We’re going to win this.” Then Monday after listening to the official reasons and placings and again announced “ We won it.” But no one knew for sure until Tuesday afternoon when they were presented with the Championship plaques on stage at the State FFA Convention Awards Program. This state team championship is the first ever for the Ogilvie FFA Chapter.
Now the real work begins as the team will have to prepare for the National FFA contest in Indianapolis next October 24-27. The contest in Indy will involve several other components that are not in the State contest. There is a technology section where the team will work in pairs to solve computer aided evaluations and a written exam. The team will spend many hours preparing over the next six months, attend many county fair judging contests and trying to raise the necessary money to get to the national contest. When October arrives the team will travel to the contest and attend several judging preparation events along the way such as judging contests and practice sessions that are set up by the National FFA, Purdue University and other livestock groups. It is going to be a fantastic adventure.
The team was welcomed by the Ogilvie student body at a celebration program at the Ogilvie School Wednesday morning. It was appreciated by the team.
The team has been most fortunate to have the assistance of Jake Grass, a well known livestock judge and coach. He is the coach of the Kanabec County 4-H team which Tony, Adam, and Anna have been on for several years. The team is also coached and advised by Allan Ambrose, Ogilvie FFA Advisor.

HK.jpgArtwork Earns Ogilvie Student Trip to NYC!HKartwork.jpg
Sunday, March 25th was the opening of the Capitol Art Show, which took place in the rotunda of the St. Paul capitol building. This show celebrates Youth Art Month, which is March. Every art teacher in the state who is a member of the Art Educators of Minnesota was invited to submit 2 artworks to represent their school for this K – 12th grade show. Ogilvie 8th grader Kristina Josul had her colorful, butterfly-themed Paper Mosaic project titled “Imagine” on display. Kristina is the daughter of Paul and Diane Josul. Heather Krahmer, who is a 10th grader and is the daughter of Blayne and Julie Krahmer, displayed her mixed media black and white drawing titled “Trees of Doom”.

Heather Krahmer was chosen to win the Best of Show award at the Capitol Art Show! A very exciting prize comes along with winning the Best of Show. Heather, one of her parents and Mrs. Falen, the art teacher, will receive an all-expense paid trip to New York City to tour the art museums there with the KJ.jpgwinners from 20 other states. The prize is sponsored by the Sargent art supply company. This award is totally separate from the Manhattan big screen opportunity that Heather had recently. It’s a different art project as well. Feel free to check out all of our other Ogilvie artwork on www.Artsonia.com.

OHS Announces New Students of the Quarter

studentsofQtr.jpgSheri Renner from the Ogilvie Credit Union, students Megan Torgeson, Madison Hippie and OHS Principal Jake Nelson.

Senior Megan Torgeson is the daughter of Dan and Laurie Torgeson.  She is involved in band, choir, National Honor Society, swimming, softball, Glee Club and Post Prom Committee.  She also takes part in events at the United Methodist Church.  Some of Megan’s pastimes include:  hanging out with her many wonderful friends, bowling with the girls, watching Disney movies and drawing (mostly dresses).  She really enjoys choir, band and the newly-formed Glee Club because she has “tons of fun learning with a great bunch of musicians”.  Megan feels that school is important because “it helps you succeed and prosper the rest of your life.  You get to learn so many things in school and use/experience what you can do with your social skills.”  If a student disliked school, Megan would offer this advice, “Stick with school because eventually it will all be over with.  School makes you more experienced and can help you get a good paying job when you’re older.”  Her future plans are to attend Bemidji State University to become a teacher of some kind with a minor in music because “that is my life”!
Freshman Madison Hippie is the daughter of Jason and Jennie Hippie.  She is the wrestling manager and is a member of Student Council.  She babysits frequently and some of her pastimes include:  hunting, fishing, being with family and friends and being outdoors.  In school, math is her favorite subject because it can be challenging but she likes the challenge.  Madison feels that school is important because, without an education, your future is extremely limited.  If someone was having a difficult time with school, she would tell them, “Get through what you need to do it and it will benefit you in the future.”  Madison plans on going to college but doesn’t know her exact plans yet.  She wants to do something in the medical field.

Thanks to Sheri Renner and the Credit Union for sponsoring this student recognition program.
